With the technological advancements and refinements made in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing operations, production of unconventional gas resources now surpasses the production of conventional resources. While conventional gas resources – those produced using a vertical-only well bore to one or more pay horizons and incorporating hydraulic fracturing – are still used by producers, unconventional gas resources – those produced using a combination vertical and horizontal well bore and lateral to one pay horizon and incorporating hydraulic fracturing – are the targets of choice today. EARTHRES’ location in the heart of the Appalachian Basin, home to the prolific Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale formations, makes us local to the Appalachian Basin and the operators working there. While the facilities required to develop conventional and unconventional gas resources are similar in many ways, the equipment, material, manpower and other facets of developing unconventional resources are generally larger than developing conventional gas resources. As such, the services used to develop unconventional gas resources can be modified and applied to developing conventional gas resources.
Well Pad Siting & Development
EARTHRES’ services specific to the development of unconventional gas resources can begin with conceptual well pad siting and development and can conclude with site monitoring for the presence of gas during flowback and initial production. Our full suite of services includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Geotechnical Investigation – of potential well pad development areas
- Well Pad Layout – to assess and evaluate options over the lifecycle of the well pad
- Land Surveying – to identify the area on which the well pad, impoundments, and supporting structures will be constructed
- Access Road Engineering and Design – to connect the well pad to State or County roads
- State or County Road Engineering and Design – to facilitate required road improvements
- Well Pad Design – for placement of temporary and permanent equipment and impoundments in relation to the wells during all phases of well pad development
- Well Pad Equipment Design – for engineering, sizing, designing and specifying all mechanical equipment required post initial production
- Takeaway Pipeline Interconnect Design – for engineering, sizing, designing and specifying all mechanical equipment required to connect to the downstream pipeline(s)
- Pre-Construction Permitting – to submit Applications and receive permits to construct
- Construction Quality Assurance Inspection and Reporting – to ensure construction is in accordance with all plans, drawings, permits, and agreements
- Environmental Site Monitoring – during construction to ensure all erosion and sedimentation controls are functioning properly
- Remote Gas Monitoring – to continuously monitor the well pad for the presence of gas and alarm personnel both locally and remotely if gas is detected
- Post-Construction Permitting – to submit Applications and receive permits to operate
- Dispersion Modeling – to ensure any venting does not create unsafe conditions or identify areas where unsafe conditions may be present
- Laser Scanning and 3D Modeling – to create accurate and complete As-Built Drawings
