EARTHRES VP and Principal Hydrogeologist, Lou Vittorio Invited Keynote Speaker on Sinkholes at the PA DEP CAC Monthly Meeting
Pipersville, PA ––- Louis F. Vittorio, Jr., PG, VP and Principal Hydrogeologist with EARTHRES, was the keynote speaker at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Citizens Advisory Council (PA DEP CAC) monthly meeting held on September 19, 2017 in the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg, PA. The purpose of Mr. Vittorio’s session was to educate the Council on Pennsylvania carbonate geology, the causes of sinkholes, and provide recommendations for best practices for repair and prevention. View a copy of the presentation here.
“The unique and varied geology of our state includes karst terrain, which is susceptible to sinkhole formation that can affect buildings and infrastructure. With proper knowledge on the cause of sinkholes and corresponding prevention techniques, the Commonwealth is better equipped to minimize the cost impact of sinkholes in karst terrain. A concern exists in developed areas that contain aging infrastructure, such as water and sewer lines, where ruptures can cause sinkholes and increase the risk of groundwater contamination. Our team at EARTHRES is pleased to volunteer and provide the Council with information on karst geology concern,” states Vittorio.
Vittorio has organized and taught classes on hydrogeology, karst geology, and ethics for PCPG, having served as their President and long-term board member. He has provided talks on water resource development for regional water associations, and specializes in aquifer evaluation, dewatering analysis, and modeling, water resource use planning, and permitting. He has been qualified as an expert at hearings related to water extraction and karst geology and has provided expert testimony for numerous groundwater related projects.
The Citizens Advisory Council strives to ensure that all people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania enjoy benefits included in Article 1, Section 27 of the PA Constitution, by: performing non-partisan, independent oversight of the operations, management and policy of the DEP, evaluate environmental issues and laws, participate in development of environmental regulations and provide advice concerning environmental matters to State officials.
