Jan Hutwelker, P.E.

President / CEO

Jan is the founder of EARTHRES and he has completed or managed successful engineering and construction projects in most of our markets. Not a career consultant, he began work in the mining industry, working as an engineer and production superintendent in Tennessee, Kentucky, and New Jersey. His early business management experience is supplemented by diverse technical experience from over 36 years of engineering on solid waste, civil, environmental and mining projects, including the past 23 years where he has led the successful growth of EARTHRES. Licensed as a Professional Engineer in multiple states, Jan is uniquely qualified to understand and see issues from a client’s perspective. He sets the standard for the EARTHRES team in maintaining its core principals of partnering with our clients to help them achieve their goals.

Terry Schmidt Vice President of Engineering

Terry Schmidt, P.E.

Vice President of Engineering

Terry has over 30 years of diverse experience, including 26 years in engineering and environmental consulting prior to joining EARTHRES. Terry is a licensed professional engineer in six states with a Master of Science degree in Mining Engineering. He serves on the Pennsylvania Coal Association Board, Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association Board, and as the Pennsylvania Mining Professionals liaison to other state associations.  He has authored and presented numerous professional papers. Specializing in engineering and environmental compliance, Terry has managed and successfully completed a variety of projects related to the planning, design, permitting, construction, operation, and environmental compliance of mining, industrial, and commercial facilities. At EARTHRES, Terry uses his expertise to successfully lead the engineering team and project management process across all sectors.

Dave Horvath, P.G.

Senior Project Manager / Director of Solid Waste Sector

Dave has 24 years of professional experience in solid waste, civil engineering, mining and environmental consulting. As the Director of Solid Waste for EARTHRES, he leads the sector in supporting our clients through increased efficiencies, innovative technologies and engineering solutions, with focus on helping their business and bottom line. His passion for industry improvement was founded in landfill and hazardous waste repository design, and has expanded to all aspects of solid waste management including various waste conversion and diversion technologies. Dave specializes in waste management facility site feasibility and planning, landfill gas and leachate management, construction quality and operational support. Dave also has experience managing coastal protection projects, geotechnical and environmental site investigations, groundwater and soil remediation at petroleum, pesticide and heavy metals impacted sites, and performing mineral exploration and geologic hazard assessments.

Tom Pullar, P.E.

Senior Project Manager / Industrial Sector Leader

With over 39 years of experience in environmental engineering, Tom is the engineer of record for over 50 drinking water facilities, wastewater treatment plants and material processing facilities. He is licensed as a Professional Engineer in multiple states, is PCQI certified and is a host municipality inspector. Responsible for facility design and permitting, environmental assessments, contingency plan preparation and compliance strategies, Tom works closely with our industrial clients to reduce costs, divert and reuse waste materials and develop environmentally sustainable practices. Tom’s experience provides substantial and intimate knowledge of NPDES, RCRA, Clean Water, Clean Streams, Solid Waste, Safe Drinking Water and many other regulatory programs. Tom has a Master’s Degree in Water Resources Engineering from Villanova University.

Senior Project Manager / Commercial Sector Leader

Scott has over 32 years of diversified management experience in successfully completing environmental site investigations, remedial actions, brownfield cleanup and reuse, and landfill permitting and compliance, site investigations, and remedial actions. His responsibilities at EARTHRES include the supervision of field sampling personnel; supervision and planning for environmental investigations and remedial activities; the review of geologic, hydrogeologic, soil, air and chemical data; contract coordination; and the development of work plans for subsurface and hydrogeological investigations. Scott is a licensed Professional Geologist in Pennsylvania.

Ezaz has more than 25 years of experience in various aspects of the petrochemical and manufacturing industry along with natural gas upstream, midstream, and downstream work in the energy sector. Ezaz brings a diverse skillset in engineering, account management, client services, and sales to EARTHRES. As a Senior Project Manager, he works in various stages of compressor station design including upgrades, well pad flow lines, Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) Fractionation and equipment design and Process Safety Management (PSM). His project experience in process and mechanical design of compressor stations, fluid transfer equipment and chemical process equipment includes fabrication, system installation, start-up and troubleshooting. Ezaz is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states and holds a Master’s degree in Civil and Industrial engineering and B.Sc. in Mechanical engineering.

Dave Allen Senior Project Manager

David F. Allen, P.E.

Senior Project Manager

Dave has over 19 years of experience in civil engineering, land development design, and construction coordination.  Dave’s extensive design management skills contribute to his successful results with planning and zoning boards and his client/team coordination skills ensure seamless project management. As a registered professional engineer in multiple states, Dave’s areas of specialization include land development planning, utility layout and design, stormwater management, public hearing support, contract specifications and drawing preparation, and facility permitting (NPDES, Erosion & Sedimentation, etc.).  Dave has certified training in Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) Best Management Practices (BMP) Manual and has personally expedited numerous NPDES permits related to construction activities. He supports all of our Sectors with his site design, permitting, and construction expertise.  Dave earned his Bachelors of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University College, Cork, Ireland.

Blaine has over 16 years of experience in structural engineering and project management, serving all sectors at EARTHRES.  Blaine has experience in commercial and industrial structural design including design of structural steel, concrete, foundations and retaining walls.  Blaine has extensive experience in field inspection, construction administrations, and project management.  Blaine is a licensed engineer in several states and holds a Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Essam A. Ahmad, P.E.

Senior Project Manager

Essam has more than 30 years of success in designing, developing, and executing national and international multimillion-dollar, complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects. These projects include solid waste management, mining operations, geotechnical engineering, water and stormwater management, land development, environmental, and construction. Essam’s expertise includes landfills, wastewater collection and treatment systems, potable and non-potable water systems, hydrologic analysis, detention and retention structures, erosion and sediment control, and water distribution systems. Essam is recognized for the ability to build and lead teams throughout the entire project lifecycle and mentor and coach team members, ensuring on-time and within budget completion in alignment with project, client, and organizational goals. In addition to working across multiple disciplines, Essam brings to EARTHRES a diverse skill set in engineering, project management, and client services. Essam is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states and holds an MS degree in Computer & Information Sciences and a BS degree in Civil Engineering.

Business Development and Project Manager

Greg has over 20 years of combined experience in the mining industry and consulting industry. Prior to joining EARTHRES, he worked in the mining industry as a construction manager, operations manager, and VP of sales. In these roles, he provided plant design, equipment application, sales, and installation oversight for surface and underground operations in hard rock, sand & gravel, and coal. In the early part of his career, he was also exposed to many different industries where he used his technical expertise to help his clients improve their operations through process improvement. At EARTHRES, Greg provides business development oversight as well as managing projects where he can apply his varied experience to provide clients with business-friendly solutions to their unique situations. Greg has completed or managed successful projects in the mining, environmental services, and commercial/industrial markets.

Nicole C. Wilson, P.E.

Technical Manager, Air Quality Services

Nicole has over 21 years of professional experience in environmental consulting and is a registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania. Specializing in air quality, most of Nicole’s current projects involve air quality permitting, emissions calculations, and recordkeeping, compliance reporting, compliance database management, air quality screening and dispersion modeling, environmental compliance auditing, stack testing coordination and support, Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know (EPCRA) chemical reporting, and safety data sheet (SDS) preparation.  Nicole holds an MS degree in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering and a BS degree in Chemical Engineering.

Jennifer Taylor, P.E.

Project Manager

Jennifer is a professional engineer with more than 20 years of professional experience in the environmental consulting field.  This experience includes working with a broad range of private and federal clients handling multi-media environmental compliance and audits, regulatory agency negotiation, water quality and solid waste permitting, development and implementation of environmental emergency response plans, site investigations, wastewater treatment plant assessment and design, and storage tank compliance.  Jennifer has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, minoring in Environmental Engineering, from The Pennsylvania State University, and was awarded the Louis Berger Visions and Values President’s Award for contributions to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Temporary Power Mission Project in Puerto Rico and the USVI.
